Strasbourg, 12/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - The president of the autonomous region of Murcia, Ramon Luis Valcarel Siso, has announced his intention to run for the presidency of the Committee of the Regions, to succeed the incumbent president, Mercedes Bresso, for the CoR mandate from 2012 to 2014.
Valcarel Siso, who is already the CoR vice-president, will be the EPP candidate. To win the favour of his peers, he has stated his priorities are: enhanced multi-level governance, a closer Europe through stronger communication and awareness-raising, promoting culture and heritage as a driver for growth and developing a stronger role for the CoR.
“The proximity of local and regional authorities to the economic realities in our cities and regions makes the Committee of the Regions a very useful institutional instrument to influence the economic governance in Brussels and make of the EUROPE 2020 strategy the driver for growth and jobs in Europe”, he said at an extraordinary meeting of the EPP Group in Brussels, on 9 March. The term of office of the current president (PES, Italy) expires on 10 August. Her successor will be known in July, following the plenary session of CoR members this summer. (MD/transl.jl/rt)
