09/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - Asselborn says Russia may sign up. Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn said on Friday 9 March that it was not out of the question that the deadlock in the United Nations Security Council over Syria might be broken. “Mr Lavrov will be present (at the Arab League meeting). His sole objective is not the marine base in Syria, there is also a very important Middle East strategy. It is not out of the question that the deadlock at the UN might be broken”, he said on the sidelines of the informal Council. Russia announced on Friday, however, that it opposed the new draft resolution on Syria from the UN Security Council. This draft resolution, which relates to humanitarian aid, is felt by Russia to be unbalanced since it does not contain a call for a ceasefire from rebel forces as well the government side.
