14/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - Ashton calls for freedom of movement for opposition leaders. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton repeated her call to the Islamic Republic of Iran on Monday 13 February to grant freedom of movement “to which they have a right” to Mir Hossein Moussavi, his wife Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karroubi, who have been under house arrest for a year. This restriction of their freedom “was done without any legal process and in violation of Iran's international obligations to respect the fundamental rights of all its citizens”, said Ashton's spokesman, who went on to say that, despite repeated calls by the international community, the three opposition figures have had only been allowed very limited visits, including from their own family members. Moussavi, who was prime minister between 1981 and 1989, and Karroubi, a member of the Iranian clergy, were defeated by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the presidential elections held in 2009. (CG/transl.rt)
