Brussels, 30/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - From 30 January, all airlines taking part in the greenhouse gas emissions quota trading scheme (ETS) will have to have an account in the EU registry which has just been opened in order to ensure accurate accounting of the emissions allowances allocated under the ETS and keep track of the ownership.
A further step has been taken, then, by the EU in the implementation of the inclusion of civil aviation in the ETS, which has been in force since 1 January 2012.
The partial opening of the new registry, managed by the European Commission, will mean that operators can receive free allocations. For this, they will have to provide verified emissions to the registry by 31 March of each year after 2012 and surrender by 30 April of each year a sufficient number of aviation allowances, general allowances and/or international credits to cover their emissions from the previous year(s). By 31 March 2013, they will have to ensure that verified emissions for 2012 are entered in the EU registry.
Requests to open accounts and all required supporting documentation will be verified by the relevant national administrators. (AN/transl.rt)
