20/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - Reunification meeting. The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, said on Friday 20 January that he was delighted by the initiative of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to convene a meeting of the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, Demistris Christofias and Dervis Eroglu, from 22 to 24 January in New York, to seek to settle the conflict between the two parts of the island. In his view “a window of opportunity currently exists” for settlement between the two communities. The meeting will, he said, provide an “opportunity in this important phase of the process to show the necessary political will, vision and determination” and this “unique opportunity” will be used for “reunification in Cyprus”. He said the EU provides its support. (CG/transl.jl)
