EU describes demonstrations as “completely unjustified”

Strasbourg, 17/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - Michael Mann, the spokesman for EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, underlined on Monday 16 January that the demonstrations of the previous day by a radical party that wanted to prevent Serbian goods from entering Kosovo were, “extremely regrettable”. He described these events as “completely unjustified” because they went against the free movement of goods, which is a, “fundamental EU principle”. Mann stressed that, “the police force had managed the situation very well”. Another demonstration is planned for 22 January. This radical party is calling for the unification of Kosovo (majority Albanian population) with Albania. The demonstration sought to prevent Serbian merchandise coming into Kosovo by blocking two border passage points near the city of Podujevo. Almost 150 people were arrested and 52 people were injured.
