Brussels, 02/12/2011 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton deplored, on Thursday 1 December, the decision taken on 30 November by the Supreme Court of Belarus sentencing Dzmitry Kanavalaw and Uladzislaw Kavalyow to death, after they had been found guilty of an attack in the Minsk underground transport system, which killed 15 in 2011. Two earlier explosive attacks had caused non fatal casualties in 2005 and 2008. Ashton nonetheless said: “I condemn absolutely acts of terrorism”. She hoped the two sentenced would be able to fully exercise their right to appeal, and stated that the EU “opposes capital punishment under all circumstances”. Belarus is the only country in Europe still applying capital punishment. (CG/transl.jl)
