Initiative to revitalise Arab civil society

Brussels, 23/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Stefan Füle presented a new joint programme with the Anna Lindh Foundation to “revitalise” Arab civil society. The three-year programme will be managed by the Foundation and is aimed at “mobilising and revitalising civil societies in the southern Mediterranean countries and improving their capacity for participating in democratic transitions”, Füle said. The initiative, which will begin at the start of 2012, will concentrate on Tunisia, Egypt and Libya in the first instance, but could be extended to include other countries of the region. The programme aims to “assist civil society actors to participate in the construction of new and more democratic societies”, by providing examples of best practice and expertise on social trends and changes and through opportunities for regional exchanges. The programme is aimed at civil society players and plans a series of regional and sub-regional initiatives. Particular focus will be laid on the media, culture and education sectors.
