Brussels, 03/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, said on Wednesday 2 November that Croatia's accession to the EU “will be a signal that the European Union's door remains open to south-east European countries”, provided the necessary reforms are implemented. During his visit to Croatia, he congratulated the country on its forthcoming accession: “a historic event both for Croatia and the EU”, he said, adding that “Croatia is a brave country which has achieved great success”.
Buzek highlighted “the impressive progress made in recent years” and called for no flagging in the pursuit of further progress. “I know how difficult it is for a nation to make the kind of transition Croatia is facing. It is a daunting task to adopt 100,000 pages of acquis in order to meet strict standards”, he stated. “Croatia is about to finish one important journey and embark on the next one, together with all other 27 member states”, he added.
The Parliament president also highlighted Croatia's commitment to the Western Balkans. “Croatia has proven to be an example of engagement and cooperation both with the EU and in the south-east Europe region. I commend the country for helping its neighbours on their path towards EU membership. I trust Croatia will remain committed to EU integration, as well as an active promoter of regional reconciliation”, he said. (CG/transl.rt)
