30 November proposal on post-2013 fisheries aid

Brussels, 03/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - On 30 November, the European Commission will adopt its proposal on the new European fund for maritime affairs and fisheries (2014-2020 period), which will take account of Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) reform. In its proposals on the multiannual financial framework for 2014-2020, the Commission provides a total allocation of €6.7 billion (about the same amount as for 2007-2013).

Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said during a visit to London that the EU budget will help fisheries to adjust to reform. She said measures financed by the new fund include: - aid to storage in favour of professional fisheries for implementing the discard ban; - trials on more selective gear; - measures for helping small-scale inshore fisheries to become organised (by joining professional organisations) and to exchange ideas and best practice (EU plans to support the organisation of social dialogue and initiatives on sales techniques); - and funds for developing the aquaculture sector (including algae).
