Brussels, 02/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Following the attack by the Kenyan military on Shabab Islamist rebels, European International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva issued a further call, on 1 November, for international; humanitarian law to be respected.
Reports of an air attack which caused the deaths of five people and left several dozen injured in the Jalib camp for displaced persons in the south of Somalia pushed the commissioner to issue her call to all parties in the fighting. “I understand that among the injured were women and children. I am especially concerned for those who, through no fault of their own, have been forced to flee their homes in search of food, water and shelter and find themselves in further danger”, she said. She welcomed the announcement by the Kenyan government of an investigation into the attack. (AN/transl.rt)
