EU welcomes UN resolution

Brussels, 24/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - On 21 October, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton welcomed the adoption of a resolution in the UN Security Council condemning the violence in Yemen. “The resolution demonstrates that the international community remains firm and united in its wish to see an end to violence, repression and political deadlock in Yemen”, she said. She stated that the resolution reflects “many of the concerns expressed by the EU” over recent months, such as its condemnation of the use of lethal force against peaceful protesters, the call for restraint by all sides, and the EU's repeated demand that President Saleh initiates political transition, and signs and implements the Gulf Consultative Council (GCC) initiative without further delay. “The victims of the president's failure to move ahead are the Yemeni people, whose situation gets worse by the day”, she added, indicating that the EU will closely monitor Yemen's progress in implementing the UN resolution.
