More bus-friendly legislation needed

Brussels, 24/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - Buses and coaches would contribute to greener and more sustainable mobility. A European Forum on the subject, held in Courtrai (Belgium) on 20 October, wished on this basis to examine the legislation to be reviewed in order to take full advantage of the benefits of this mode of transport. Driving and rest time, the creation of a fair VAT system, appropriate weights and dimensions of the vehicles, low-emission zones favourable to the industry are all grey areas in need of clarification. Taking part in the discussion, MEP Isabelle Durant (Greens/EFA, Belgium) acknowledged that "obviously, this is no time to reduce taxes on fuels, because this would send the wrong signal out to carriers (…), But it is high time to acknowledge that preferential tax regimes for rival modes of transport are undermining this vital industry and should therefore be phased out".
