Brussels, 11/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Environment Council trusts that the international conference on sustainable development, Rio+20 (4-6 June 2012, Rio de Janeiro), will result in a green economy roadmap, together with specific goals and action to be taken at international level, as well as a package of reforms leading to strengthened international environmental governance. A number of member states, with France to the fore, would like the United Nations environmental programme (UNEP) to be changed into a UN specialised agency for the environment so as to streamline UN operations in this field. A majority of delegations consider that the funding of sustainable development policy and action should come from public and private sources. The detailed negotiation position of the EU should be presented by November 2011. (AN/transl.jl)
