Brussels, 05/10/2011 (Agence Europe) - Ireland is in line to receive up to €35 million from the European Globalisation adjustment Fund (EGF) to help nearly 6,000 construction workers in Ireland if a European Commission proposal brought forward on Wednesday 5 October is passed. This sum results from three applications from the Irish authorities following the sharp fall in demand in the construction sector since 2007 which put 3,348 companies in difficulty. The Commission notes that, in mid-2009, one worker in three in this sector was unemployed. If the €35 million aid is granted, this will be the largest intervention in EGF history, equating to one tenth of all aid paid out since 2007 (€357.6 million to help 76,000 workers). (JK/transl.rt)
