Brussels, 30/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - In the EU Management Committee meeting on Thursday 29 September, the European Commission agreed to the import of 19,593 additional tonnes of reduced rate sugar. This kind of measure is designed to facilitate sugar supply to the EU. This is the fifth and final tendering process of this type.
The 19,593 tonnes are divided as follows: 14,500 tonnes of raw cane sugar for refining at a minimum import duty of €227 per tonne; 827 tonnes of raw cane sugar not for refining at a minimum duty of €300 per tonne; and 4,266 tonnes of white sugar at a minimum duty of €308.8 per tonne.
Over the five awards of contract, the total quantity of reduced rate sugar imports is 356,566 tonnes, broken down thus: 294,995 tonnes of raw cane sugar for refining, 4,588 tonnes of raw cane sugar not for refining and 56,963 tonnes of which sugar (plus 20 tonnes of other sugars). On 27 May 2011, the Commission decided to allow the import of sugar at reduced rates by means of calls for tender. At the same time, it agreed to the import of 200,000 tonnes of duty free sugar into the European Union between 1 July and 30 September. (LC/transl.rt)
