Agreement on Euratom, no discussion on ITER

Brussels, 30/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Competitiveness Council reached agreement on Friday 30 September on a general approach on the European Community atomic energy framework programme (Euratom), but did not discuss funding of the ITER project. During an exchange of views, ministers were reluctant to consider any further Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (EIP) projects for 2012. The Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU will now open negotiations with the European Parliament (EP) and the European Commission on the funding of the Euratom framework programme for 2012-2013. According to Polish Science and Higher Education Minister Barbara Kudrycka, a final decision is to be expected by November. The current agreement provides for €2.2 billion worth of funding of indirect action for research in the area of nuclear energy (fission and fusion) and €118 million for radioactive protection and safety. In addition, €233 millions have been allocated for direct action, such as research by the Joint Research Centre (JRC). Agreement was also reached on procedures for involvement by players, such as companies, research centres and universities, in the Euratom framework programme. “The agreement reached today is crucial for ensuring continuity in nuclear research by ensuring funding until the end of 2013”, said Kudrycka. Political agreement was also reached on amending funding arrangements for the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen (FCH) joint undertaking, which is likely to lead to more private companies becoming involved. Adoption of conclusions on the “More years, better lives” joint programming initiative will give shape and breathe life into this programme which seeks to structure and coordinate European research on demographic changes and the ageing population.
