Van Rompuy welcomes adoption of UN resolution

Brussels, 21/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Council President Herman Van Rompuy warmly welcomed they presence at the United Nations of Abdul Jalil, Chairman of the Transitional National Council. “It is the coronation of a long and difficult process; the sign that the international community has rallied behind the forces of the new Libya and behind the Libyan people. It is also the beginning of a new phase”, he said at the high-level meeting on Libya on 20 September. He also welcomed the unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2009 on 16 September. This resolution allows a UN mission to be set up to help Libya rebuild its institutions. “The EU is committed to implement it (Resolution 2009) within all its powers and competences”, he stated.

Van Rompuy said that the EU, in close collaboration with the UN and other partners, “is already at work with the Transitional National Council's Libya Stabilisation Team. We have already deployed teams on the ground in Tripoli.” “We also look forward to setting a new path for the EU Libya relations. We have (re)opened the EU Embassy. Connecting Libya better to the world's biggest and most advanced market would offer good perspectives for the success of Libya's transition”, he added. Noting that “building the future may prove to be as difficult as overcoming the past”, Van Rompuy said that Libya must now rebuild the state, stabilise security and restart the economy.
