Brussels, 06/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - A constantly evolving situation but one which allows a certain optimism regarding the future of Libya after the fall of the Muammar Gaddafi regime. Such is the general sentiment expressed by Agostino Miozzo, Director General for Crisis Response at the European External Action Service (EEAS). After heading a European mission to Tripoli lasting several days in order to set up a permanent EU office there, Miozzo shared his impressions with the press upon returning to Brussels on Tuesday 6 September. He said one could have confidence in the new generation of political decision-makers which is gradually beginning to take shape, adding that the new generation has an incredible sense of pride and they are aware that they must henceforth assume responsibility for their own country and for their country's future - hence their determination to ensure coordinated reconstruction of Libya, with the means that the United Nations and the EU can provide. According to Miozzo, it is of prime importance to recognise and respect Libya's need for independence and, for that reason, the EU has chosen a gradual approach to aid. The opening of the EU office in Tripoli has been a “strong symbol”, highly appreciated on the ground, he assured. It is a major step and will soon be followed by others. The second EU mission to Tripoli is now being prepared, European sources say. It will thus step up its personnel numbers to around a dozen. However, before beginning European aid projects, the new authorities need time to make the country completely secure and above all to achieve a unity that many fear will be difficult to attain.
