Human rights associations are mistreated

Brussels, 14/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EMHRN (Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network) condemns in a press release the violence and harassment of activists working for the Moroccan human rights association (AMDH).

The network, which refrained from all comment on the political reform proposed to Moroccans through revision of the constitution followed by a referendum on 1st July which won nearly 98% “yes” votes, nonetheless denounces the treatment inflicted on militant human rights associations. It states that, since 20 February when demonstrations began, with the AMDH active in this movement aimed at calling for political reform in Morocco, the association and its militants have on several occasions been the target of psychological intimidation and physical violence.

The EMHRN calls on the EU and its delegation in Rabat as well as on EU member state embassies in Morocco to implement EU guidelines on the protection of human rights defenders and to take all necessary measures to ensure guidelines for protection are applied. (F.B./transl.jl)
