Brussels, 13/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Home Affairs Minister Cecilia Malmström announced on Wednesday 13 July that European Commission experts would be visiting Denmark to make an on the spot assessment of measures implemented by Denmark at its borders with Sweden and Germany. Such measures include strengthened and permanent customs controls (50 additional customs officers have been deployed for the initial period) which, as Copenhagen points out, are intended to combat crime and especially arms and drug trafficking. The appraisal will be made over just two days, on 14 and 15 July, and was decided in agreement with the Danish authorities. The commissioner still reserves herself the right to trigger infringement proceedings if controls by Denmark are found not to be fully in line with Schengen provisions and the free movement of goods, services and persons. Discussion between the Commission and Copenhagen began on 13 May with a letter of formal notice addressed to the Danish authorities by President Barroso. (S.P./transl.jl)
