01/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - European legislation on copyright. A European law on copyright is necessary to strike a balance between private and public interests. Such was the appeal made to the European Union during a meeting on copyright and intellectual property in the digital era, organised on Thursday 30 June by the S&D Group at the European Parliament. The initiative follows the copyright summit that unfolded in Brussels early June. Joe McNammee, who coordinates the European Digital Rights campaign, explained that the existence of 27 different national legislations on copyright in the EU makes it impossible to have a European Google, which would spend all its money, he said, in the courts of the 27 member states. According to Luigi Berlinguer (S&D, Italy), who is a member of the justice committee, the need for European regulations on rights was recently heightened with the launch of new products based on “cloud technologies”.
