Strasbourg, 10/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament reiterates its energetic condemnation of the seizing of power by Rajoelina, who is carrying out an “illegal and illegitimate regime” in Madagascar, in a resolution it adopted on Thursday 9 June. Speaking out against the “multiple violations of human rights and violence” committed by Madagascar's security forces, it calls for “an independent investigation” to bring those responsible for these acts to justice. The MEPs call on the Southern African Development Community at its forthcoming summit this Saturday 11 June to put an end to the political deadlock with a view to re-establishing the rule of law by means of free elections. They called on the European Union and the United Nations Security Council to continue and extend sanctions against the regime until the political crisis is resolved. It goes on to express its “grave concern” at the illegal looting and export of precious woods, minerals and wild animals. (M.B./transl.fl)
