Opposition to death penalty under any circumstances

Strasbourg, 10/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has reiterated its long-standing opposition to the death penalty in all cases and under all circumstances. In particular, it has called on the American authorities not to impose the death penalty on Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. Subjected to torture and held in secret by the CIA in Poland in 2002 and 2003, this Saudi prisoner was transferred to the American prison at Guantánamo Bay, where he is alleged to have been tortured. Indicted for the role he allegedly played in 2000 in an attack on an American military vessel based in Yemen, he will go before a military commission once American President Barack Obama has given his agreement for these procedures to resume. The accusation recommends the death penalty. MEPs call on the institutions of the EU and the member states urgently to contact the American authorities about the issue. They state that “normal criminal trials under civilian jurisdiction are the best way to resolve the status of Guantánamo detainees” and call upon the member states to work with the United States to receive more detainees freed from Guantánamo.
