Brussels, 07/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - As UN climate talks resume in Bonn at expert level (6-17 June), Greenpeace calls on the world's governments to step up their ambitions and to resolutely commit themselves to bringing about a “renewable energy future”.
With this in view, the NGO takes the results of a further International Energy Agency (IAE) study as a base. The study, which states the “prospect of limiting the global increase in temperature to 2° C is getting bleaker”, shows that carbon emissions at international level last year reached a record level, despite global recession. Greenpeace also takes as a basis the last report by the GIEC (the group of intergovernmental experts on climate developments), showing that it is not only possible but also economically viable to transform the existing energy systems into renewable energy-based solutions.
Tove Maria Ryding of Greenpeace International said that, with this peak in emissions, it is clear that political decision-makers are not in phase with the rate of climate change in the real world. She said that, instead of speaking of the problems of climate change, governments must begin to act for concrete solutions while respecting their commitments to reduce global emissions and by investing in renewable energies.
