Brussels, 26/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - There have been a number of reactions to a European Commission report, published on 24 May, on the introduction of a single European market for copyright and other intellectual property rights. MEP Marielle Gallo (EPP, France) said she approved the coherent approach suggested by the European Commission, which recognises that all types of intellectual property rights are pillars of the knowledge-based economy. She said that for economic growth, it was essential that a legal framework be established to provide protection for all intellectual property rights focusing on protection under a single patent, equivalent protection of intellectual property rights on and off-line and updating the EU trademark registration system. In a joint press release, telecoms associations (Cable Europe, ECTA, ETNO, EuroISPA and GSMA) welcome the overall approach taken by the Commission because traditional copyright models urgently need adjustment to match the online environment. The organisations state: “We are collectively concerned about the Commission's plan to increase the role of internet service providers in preventing illegal download, particularly if voluntary cooperation is proposed that would bypass necessary safeguards”. The European Publishers' Council (EPC) welcomed “the Commission's strategy, that acknowledges that copyright is a major enabler in the internet economy, encouraging the creation of diverse, authoritative, quality content and giving creators the incentive to make their content available on the net.” The Federation of European Publishers (FEP) welcomes the inclusion of the principle of diligent search in the draft directive (for the authors of orphan works), without preventing the legitimate use of orphan works. IMPALA, the Independent Music Companies' Association, “welcomes the move by the European Commission to prioritise the protection and promotion of copyright and other intellectual property rights”. IMPALA is in favour of making internet service providers take greater part in the fight against illegal downloads. (I.L./transl.fl)
