04/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - Austrian referendum. Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann has confirmed that Austria will hold a referendum on the accession of Turkey to the European Union if negotiations between the EU and Ankara reach agreement on Turkey's joining the Union. “Even in the event of a positive decision following negotiations between the EU and Turkey, we will hold a referendum here in Austria”, he said as the Turkish President Abdullah Güll was visiting Austria. The chancellor said, too, that, in the event of Turkish accession to the EU, “fundamental values, such as freedom of opinion, human rights, democratic involvement and freedom of the press, must prevail unconditionally”.
