Greens/EFA stunned by ban on Bildu coalition

Brussels, 04/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Greens/European Free Alliance (EFA) Group in the European Parliament is outraged at the recent decision of the Spanish Supreme Court to ban the Basque Bildu coalition, which includes Eusko Alkartasuna and the Alternatiba. In a press release, the Greens criticise this court ruling which has come no more than a month after another Basque party, Sortu, was banned. They say that this could slow the peace process with separatists and wonder if Spain really wants peace in the Basque Country. With the ban on the Bildu coalition, “the whole left-wing 'abertzale' electorate will be deprived of political representation: freedom to stand as a candidate has not been observed”, rails MEP Catherine Grèze. The EU, which sends electoral observation teams throughout the world cannot even apply basic democratic rules to itself, she states. Similar criticism comes from EFA. The decision of the Spanish Supreme Court is “wrong in principle, undemocratic and contrary to the core values of the EU”, the group states in a press release. (H.B./transl.rt)
