Dublin wants to strengthen its influence within EU

Brussels, 26/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Irish government has convened a special meeting of the Irish parliament (Dáil) for 9 May, Europe Day. The gathering will discuss the future of Europe and the role that Ireland should play in the process of European integration. Prime Minister Enda Kenny (who will open the meeting with a State of the Union address, European Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn and the 12 Irish MEPs will take part in the special session that will rekindle Ireland's involvement and active participation in Europe, Irish Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton said. The sitting will focus on where the EU should be by 2020 and what Ireland's role will be in getting there, the Irish Times wrote on 25 April. The aim will also be to analyse how cooperation between the Irish government and the European institutions can be enhanced and how Ireland can proactively influence European policy. (H.B./transl.fl)
