04/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - Net 5% rise in rail freight transport in 2010. Freight transport by rail increased by 5.4% in 2010 in western Europe and by over 7% in eastern Europe compared to 2009, according to a press release from the Community of European Railways (CER) on Friday 1 April. Passenger transport by rail also increased from 2% to 4.5% in the two areas respectively according to CER, which confirms the continued recovery in the rail sector after the slowdown caused by the global economic and financial crisis in the previous years.
