European Asylum Support Office deploys teams in Greece

Brussels, 04/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - On 1st April, the European Asylum Support Office deployed teams to Greece to help the country to improve its asylum system, the Commission has announced in a press release. This asylum regime came in for condemnation on 21 January this year by the European Court of Human Rights and is regularly criticised due to the degrading treatment it inflicts on asylum seekers. “The Support Office has a strong role to play in providing concrete solidarity and support to all member states: those under exceptional pressure to make their asylum system more fair and efficient”, the Commission writes. At the end of last year, Greece, under pressure, adopted a National Action Plan for the management of migrations and reform of the asylum law, and a presidential decree on asylum, designed to reabsorb a possible influx of more than 50,000 dossiers. The Commission states that it is now “essential that Greece ensures that appropriate resources are allocated for the implementation of all aspects of the Plan” and that is takes “immediate action to remedy the situation”.
