Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland sent a letter to Greek Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou on Friday 18 March to remind him of the urgency of implementing the recommendations issued by the Council of Europe committee for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading sentences and treatment (CPT) on 15 March. The CPT condemned the treatment and detention conditions of illegal migrants in Greece, in particular, the continuing lack of action on the part of the Greek authorities to improve the situation on the detention of illegal migrants and the state of the prison system.
