S&D Group conference on media freedom

Brussels, 23/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - On 3 March in Brussels, the Socialist and Democrats (S&D) Group at the European Parliament will be organising a conference on media freedom. The objective will be to illustrate the threats to freedom of the media in several member states, particularly France, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. It will also discuss the possible need to introduce legislation on freedom and pluralism in the media in the European Union. Maria Badia i Cutchet MEP (S&D, Spain), group vice chair, declared: “We are deeply concerned by threats to freedom and pluralism of the media in several member states of the European Union. We would like to listen to the opinions of the journalists themselves, in addition to their own evaluation of the situation and what they believe would be the best implements to introduce in this context. We think that options could include European legislation being introduced”. (I.L./transl.fl)
