Viktor Orbán wants magic date to be set

Brussels, 09/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers wants the EU27 in April 2011 to set a definite date for the end of the EU accession talks with Croatia. At a press conference after his official visit to Zagreb on Tuesday 8 February, the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, said that the months of March and April would be crucial for the process of Croatia joining the EU. “March must be a success story in Croatia's accession talks with the EU and the magic date should be stated in April,' said Orbán, standing next to the Croatian prime minister, Jadranka Kosor. Orbán warned about the danger of delay, pointing out that it if is not possible to stick to this timetable, Croatia's accession would be delayed. Croatia has closed 28 of the 35 negotiating chapters so far, but some rather tricky chapters still need to be negotiated, like competition policy (where the restructuring of shipyards is problematic) and justice and fundamental rights (where no fewer than 22 closing benchmarks need to be met before the talks can be drawn to an end). Kosor explained that the Croatian government was hoping to conclude the talks in June and that later this week she would be sending the European Commission a progress report on reform of the justice system. The Commission will assess the document and report back to the member states in the middle of next month. (H.B./transl.fl)
