09/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - CER highlights support for cleaner modes of transport. On Wednesday 9 February, in a press release, the Community of European Railways and Infrastructure Companies (CER) declared that future Trans-European Network Transport (TEN-T) should promote greater use of clean and energy efficient modes of transport. The organisation is advocating this response, although EU transport ministers gave the go-ahead on Tuesday 8 February for the future TEN-T planning process, favouring a multimodal architecture for the main transport routes in Europe. According to the CER, it would also be a good idea to increase the Community budget for funding TEN-T, increasing the rate of co-funding with the European budget for projects and planning longer term funding than the EU's seven-year financial perspectives. The CER is also calling for the introduction of self-funding mechanisms, such as the “user pays” or “polluter pays” principles. (A.By./transl.fl)
