Brussels, 08/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton is “deeply concerned” at the border clashes that have taken place between Cambodia and Thailand close to the 11th century temple to which both states lay claim. “The high representative calls on both countries to exercise utmost restraint, take the necessary steps to reduce tension and to resume their dialogue in order to resolve their differences peacefully”, Ashton's spokeswoman said on the evening of 7 February. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, accusing Thailand of “repeated aggressions”, has called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council so that UN troops can be deployed in the area. His Thai counterpart Abhisit Vejjajiva, who has also written to the Security Council, has blamed Cambodia for the tension and accused it of opening fire. The international Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the ruins of the temple belonged to Cambodia, but did not say which country owned the surrounding 4.2 km2 of ground which has now become the bone of contention between the two.
