Brussels, 08/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Environmental Bureau (EEB), Europe's largest federation of environmental NGOs, has welcomed the outcome of the vote in the European Parliament (EP) on the revision of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive (see EUROPE 10308). The EEB is delighted that the EP has not watered down the level of ambition of its environment committee and has thus sent a clear signal to the Council and the Commission.
“By voting in favour of an ambitious collection target based on WEEE generated, by claiming for standards on e-waste management and by enabling financial incentives for optimised design, the European Parliament has grasped the important potentials of the WEEE legislation to change our e-waste management from pure end of pipe solutions to a more integrated approach on resources efficiency”, said Stephane Arditi, EEB Senior Waste Policy Officer.
The EEB congratulated the EP for calling on member states to address consistently the financial resources to increase collection. It is pleased, too, with the amendment asking for a better consideration for nanomaterials in e-waste treatment processes. (A.N./transl.rt)
