On the eve of the NATO summit during which Allied heads of state and government are to approve the new NATO Strategic Concept, Michael Gahler (EPP, Germany) called for a White Paper to be developed on European security and defence strategy. The EU and NATO are the “two pillars of European security” and it is now “important” to coordinate their two strategic visions, Gahler said in a press release published on Thursday 18 November. It is up to the 21 EU member states that are also members of NATO to take this initiative, he said, explaining that the process of drafting the White Paper should be carried out openly at a level similar to that of the work of the Albright commission on the NATO Strategic Concept.
