Commission denies existence of discussions

Brussels, 12/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 12 October, the European Commission denied the existence of discussions on the extended deadline for Greece with regard to repayment of the €110 billion loan agreed by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). On Tuesday 12 October, a spokesperson for the commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, Olli Rehn, said that no discussion is open between the parties. According to the spokesperson, the sustained implementation of the economic programme by the Greek government and the remarkable fall in bonuses paid to Greek bond holders in comparison to bonuses paid for German spreads and the positive reaction from the markets to the payment of the second tranche of financial aid and the improvement of investor confidence in Greece would suggest that “Greece is on the right track”. In an interview with Skaï television broadcast on Monday evening, the Greek minister of finance, Georges Papaconstantinou, referred to the existence of informal discussions with the EU and the IMF. The 2014-2015 repayments from the Greek state will increase from €40 billion to €70 billion. No decision will be taken without the approval of the EU, which provided two thirds of aid.
