Brussels, 09/09/2010 (Agence Europe) -The illegal presence of the genetically modified Amadea potato, produced by BASF in Amflora fields (a legally cultivated GMO) in Sweden was probably due to human error in seed handling. The German chemicals company gave this explanation on Wednesday 8 September in Brussels, during the meeting arranged by the Commission and attended by Swedish and Czech representatives involved in the affair (EUROPE 10208). To be certain about the matter, the Commission will send a team of experts from DG SANCO, the Common Research Centre and member states to BASF Plant Science during the middle of next week. The suspect seeds in the fields where they have grown in Sweden and Germany have been seized. In the Czech Republic, the only country where Amadea is grown, the harvest did not take place. The unwanted potatoes could therefore not be used for their starch or for animal feed. (A.N./transl.fl)
