EU and Belgrade still looking for “common understanding” on draft UN resolution on Kosovo

Brussels, 08/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - Serbian President Boris Tadic and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton, meeting in Brussels on Tuesday evening 7 September, tried to come to a compromise on the text of the resolution on Kosovo which Serbia intends to put to the vote in the UN General Assembly in New York this Thursday 9 September. In the draft text submitted to the UN at the end of July, Serbia said that the “unilateral secession” of Kosovo is an “unacceptable way” to resolve the problem and that Belgrade and Pristina should discuss all the issues, including the status of Kosovo. This draft text is not acceptable to the EU, 22 members of which have recognised Kosovo's independence. Ashton and the EU proposed a more conciliatory text to Serbia, speaking of “dialogue” between Belgrade and Pristina on general issues and on the region's European future. While Serbian press reported on Tuesday that Tadic, who left Brussels on Tuesday evening, was ready to amend the draft resolution along the lines of Europe's wishes, Ashton's spokeswoman would not confirm this, though she indicated that progress had been made on Tuesday evening. “Contact will be made this Wednesday (8 September). Work is continuing,” she said. The aim is to reach a “common understanding” between the EU and Serbia on the draft resolution that is “based on dialogue and turned towards the future”.
