Brussels, 31/08/2010 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by Iuliu Winkler (EPP, Romania) by 20 votes in favour, one against and no abstentions, on Monday 30 August, the European Parliament's committee on international trade, chaired by Vital Moreira (S&D, Portugal), gave its approval for €90 million in EU financial support for Moldova to help this neighbouring country overcome the financial crisis. The funds will help Chisinau to finance its balance of payments deficit and to meet its budgetary needs. It comes as a complement to aid from the IMF, the World Bank and other bilateral aid already granted to Moldova. Payment will be in three or four instalments, two in 2010 and one or two in 2011. In November 2009, the Parliament gave its support for macro-financial aid to Serbia (€200 million in the form of a loan), Bosnia-Herzegovina (€100 million loan), Armenia (€65 million in loans and €35 million in donations) and Georgia (€46 million in subsidies), and in May this year it approved macro-financial aid to Ukraine (a loan of €500 million). The Parliament's definitive endorsement of aid to Moldova must come with the adoption by the plenary assembly of the Winkler report on 7 September, in Strasbourg. (E.H./transl.jl)
