THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/china

26/08/2010 (Agence Europe) - On behalf of the European Commission, José Manuel Barosso on Wednesday 25 August has sent the Chinese prime minister Wen Jiabao his “sincere condolences” further to the accident of the Chinese regional airline Henan Airlines, which crashed on Tuesday near Lindu airport at Yichun, in the northeast of the country. According to commentators, the air crash puts an end to the longest period of safety (2,102 days without accidents) in the history of civil aviation in the country. The aircraft, which was carrying 96 people, got into trouble on landing on Tuesday evening, two kilometres from the airport, leaving 42 dead. Among the 54 survivors was the Chinese deputy minister for human resources and social security Sun Baoshu. Lindu airport, which was closed after the accident, reopened on Thursday. (A.By./transl.fl)
