Brussels, 06/08/2010 (Agence Europe) - The Luxembourg minister for financial affairs, Jean Asselborn, confirmed on Thursday 5 August when speaking on Radio DNR the information given on the Al-Aribiya website whereby Luxembourg is interested in taking in a Guantanamo inmate. The report came after a visit last Monday by a Luxembourg delegation to the US base in Cuba where suspected terrorists are detained. An agreement will be signed with the United States in coming weeks, the minister said, not ruling out the fact that another detainee might also be taken. “The aim is to release an innocent man and to help him rebuild his life. (…) It is a humanitarian gesture”, he added. Europe so far has taken in about 20 former Guantanamo inmates (see EUROPE 10187). (B.C./transl.jl)
