Possible EU police mission

Brussels, 05/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - The president of the provisional government of Kyrgyzstan, Roza Otounbayeva, wants the EU to send an EU police mission to the south of the country to prevent the resurgence of violent clashes between two ethnic groups, the Kyrgyz and the Uzbeks, explained EU Aid Commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, on Monday 5 July following a visit to the country on 2-3 July. No official request has yet been made to the EU, but diplomats say the question of a possible police mission might be discussed at a meeting of the EU's Policy and Security Committee to discuss the situation in Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday 6 July, a meeting to be attended by the EU's Special Representative for central Asia, Pierre Morel. The matter is expected to be on the agenda of the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council on 26 July. (H.B./transl.fl)
