Karel De Gucht has not ruled out any improvement in EU agriculture offer on domestic support

Brussels, 02/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - On the sidelines of the G8 and G20 summits in Toronto on 26 and 27 June, Barack Obama, diplomatic sources have revealed, warned his partners that the proposals currently on the table in the Doha Round negotiations at the WTO were not enough and would have to be radically altered so that the United States did not lose its competitive advantage in industry and services to emerging counties. Concessions from the emerging countries in these areas would mean, however, that they will ask more of the developed world in agriculture, including the EU on domestic support. This is a possibility that Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht did not rule out in a speech to the professional and cooperative organisations COPA-COGECA on 24 June. If additional efforts in industry and services are asked of emerging countries, the EU might “face further calls in agriculture. It would be difficult for us and we would have to work out how to take account of them, especially on domestic support,” he warned. (E.H./transl.rt)
