Brussels, 28/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission does not intend to bring in legislation to regulate the wearing of full body coverings, such as the burqa, in public places. “I do not see the need for a European law on the burqa,” said European Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström on Monday 28 June. The Spanish government is considering including a measure to restrict the wearing of full body coverings in public places in a forthcoming law on freedom of religion, said Spanish Home Affairs Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba. “This, however, is a domestic politics decision,” he said. Other countries are considering similar action. Belgium is preparing to outlaw all-covering garments like the burqa in all public places, and a similar Bill is due to come before the French Parliament in July. (B.C./transl.rt)
