Twelve member states have not correctly transposed directive on audiovisual media services

Brussels, 24/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has called on 12 member states (Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia) to update their national broadcasting regulations as a matter of urgency in order to bring them into line with the European directive on audiovisual media services. The directive in question adapts EU broadcasting rules to the requirements of the digital age and creates rules on the use of services such as TV by internet, pay video and mobile television, in order to ensure better legal protection for European viewers. Member states should have implemented the directive by amending their national legislation by the end of 2009. At present, the 12 above-mentioned member states have not implemented all the rules or have not yet informed the Commission that such rules have been adopted, as they are supposed to do. Consequently, the Commission has decided to send reasoned opinions to these member states. If, within two months, they have not notified the Commission of measures taken to ensure complete implementation of the directive, the Commission may refer the matter to the European Union Court of Justice.
