Public consultation on children's rights

Brussels, 11/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 11 June EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding announced the opening of a public consultation exercise until 20 August 2010 on a new EU children's rights strategy. The consultation will cover issues like child-suited access to justice and children's involvement in the judicial system (particularly as witnesses); justice policies to protect children's rights in areas like family mediation; protection of groups of vulnerable children (child victims of violence, sexual exploitation and/or human trafficking and children living in poverty); and getting children involved in drawing up policy concerning them. The Commission will publish a report summarising the outcome of the consultation, which will be used to draw up a new communication on children's rights over the period 2011-2014. In parallel, the Commission is carrying out research, to be published in October, with the aim of getting input from children by means of reflection groups. (B.C./transl.fl)
