20/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - A delegation of high-ranking officials from the European Commission's DG Trade will travel to Kuala Lumpur in June to examine with their Malaysian opposite numbers the feasibility of a free trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and Malaysia. Following an initial bilateral meeting in March, the scope of any future FTA is proving to be a stumbling block. Malaysia would like to get rid of customs duties on manufactured goods, the EU wants liberalisation of trade in services and the abolition of non-tariff barriers, but it is the opening up of public procurement, which the EU would like to see, that is proving the biggest problem. As for Vietnam, the Commission also wants to negotiate a partnership and cooperation agreement (PCA) with Malaysia. (E.H./transl.rt)
